Substrate prep

Ensure decking or purlins are clean, level, and fastened to spec. Install underlayment and ice & water shield at eaves, valleys, and penetrations.

Clip layout

Snap layout lines and install floating clips to the substrate at the specified spacing — typically 12″ to 24″ o.c. depending on wind zone and gauge.

Panel installation

Set panels into clips from eave to ridge, interlocking each seam before clipping. Run panels full length to avoid end laps wherever possible.

Mechanical seaming

Using a mechanical seaming tool, lock all panel seams in a continuous pass from eave to ridge. This step creates the watertight lock that gives standing seam its performance.

FAQs.

What's the difference between 1" and 2" seam heights?

Seam height affects the visual profile of the roof and the panel’s spanning capability. Taller seams (2″) have a more dramatic architectural appearance and can span wider purlin spacing. Shorter seams (1″) are more common on residential projects. All three heights are available from Onsite Metals — your choice depends on aesthetics, span requirements, and budget.

Do I need a mechanical seaming tool?

For standing seam panels, yes — the seaming tool is what locks the panels together and creates the watertight joint. Snap lock panels use the same concealed fastener system but click together without the tool, making them a popular choice for contractors who don’t own a seamer. We can advise on which system fits your project best.

Can standing seam panels go over an existing roof?

In many cases, yes — over solid decking or with a proper batten/strapping system over an existing metal roof. The key requirements are a flat, stable substrate and proper ventilation. We recommend consulting with your local building authority and ensuring the existing structure can handle the additional load.

What warranty comes with the panels?

Kynar 500 PVDF coatings typically carry a manufacturer’s paint warranty of 30–40 years against fading and chalking. Panel structural performance warranties vary — contact us for current warranty documentation on the gauge and profile you’re ordering.
